$624,000 recovered for Charleston restaurant employees who were forced to share tips

Charleston, South Carolina – The U.S. Department of Labor released a report on Monday that said thousands of dollars in tips had been recovered for employees at a restaurant in Downtown Charleston who had been forced to take part in an illegal tip pool.

It was announced that workers at the restaurant were forced to share the tips they got with non-tipped employees and the management. The restaurant also didn’t pay tipped staff the difference between their direct salaries and the federal minimum wage, and they paid overtime rates that were below the federal requirement, according to the United States Department of Labor.

An investigation showed that the illegal financial structure resulted in $624,017 in losses for 92 employees.

This isn’t the first time such violations have occurred, and they are especially common in the restaurant industry.

Please visit this page for further information on claiming back wages if you believe you are entitled to any.
