Beaufort County area scam costs residents thousands of dollars

Beaufort County, South Carolina – Authorities warn local residents to be aware of a scam that caused multiple victims to pay thousands of dollars in the past few weeks.

Beaufort County officials say scammers place calls and claim to be an employee of a local bail bond company or a potential victim’s grandchild. They then ask for a cash payment so a loved one can avoid jail for a traffic violation or an accident.

As of now, multiple cases were reported when the scammers scheduled a meeting in person. The man that collects the money was described as a Hispanic man in his twenties. In multiple occasions this man introduce himself as Mike or Michael. He was driving blue Nissan Altima.

If anyone gets contacted, do not give money at any cost.

Anyone with information on the subject or who may have been approached about this scam should contact Staff Sergeant Eric Calendine at 843-255-3427 or CrimeStoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111 for a possible cash reward.
