Charleston County School District to assist 450 family as a part of their food program

Charleston, South Carolina – Charleston County School District will provide help to 450 families as a part of the CCSD’s Head Start program.

The organizers say the program is designed to reduce the food insecurity and promote healthy eating. The pilot program is funded by Food Lion Feeds in partnership with Share Our Strength.

450 families are given box of food worth 25$ every two weeks since March 2021. The products in the box are fresh produce by GrowFood Carolina. According to the organizers, each box includes recipes ideas beside the food. Online classes for healthy cooking and recipes are also available.

“Food Lion Feeds is committed to not only providing meals for families in need but supporting programs and services that help address the underlying issues related to food insecurity,” said Jennifer Blanchard, director of community relations, Food Lion. “Through our partnership with No Kid Hungry, we are working to eliminate the barriers to food access and nutrition education, and we believe this program brings together the right organizations to enhance support for children and their families.”

“We believe that through access to nutritious food and cooking education, we can support community demand in providing healthy eating options and nutrition education for families with young children,” said Diana Hovey, senior vice president of Share Our Strength. “This program will allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of this strategy and making lasting impact in other communities.”

The pilot program should reveal the effect how the food access and healthy living education will affect those in need of food. Last year has been pretty tough due to pandemic and more families than ever suffered food insecurity.

Food Lion Feeds has been partnered with Share Our Strength since 2019.
