Charleston County School District will send home students who don’t wear masks at schools, the transition period about to end

Charleston, South Carolina – Students who don’t wear masks at schools despite the fact that they are mandated to, will be sent home, the Charleston County School District officials say.

The Charleston County School District decision about the mask mandate was brought on September 13 and it was enforced starting last Monday.

The school district laid out a staggered response to students not wearing masks to allow for a transition period at the beginning of the week.

Students only faced in-school virtual learning for not wearing their masks Tuesday, but officials are taking extra steps to enforce the mask mandate.

“Our intent is not to deprive any student of an education,” Charleston County School Board Chair Rev. Dr. Eric Mack said. “But, we cannot continue to allow unmasked persons in school settings where masked students who either cannot or have not been vaccinated are more at risk for the spread of COVID.”

Starting Wednesday, the school district’s policy says students will be sent home if they are not wearing masks.
