The U.S. 17 and Main Road project, also known as Main Road Segment A, is funded through the 2016 Transportation Sales Tax. Improvements begin at Bees Ferry Road and extend approximately 2.4 miles along Main Road to the intersections of River Road and Chisolm Road.

According to county officials, the project is designed to address several long-standing transportation and infrastructure needs in the area. Key goals include easing traffic congestion at the busy U.S. 17 and Main Road intersection, increasing roadway capacity along Main Road, and improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians, including access across the Stono River. Enhancements to stormwater drainage throughout the corridor are also a major component of the work.
