Charleston, South Carolina – Charleston leaders are coming together on Monday afternoon to honor an officer who lost his life more than 150 years ago.
Private Thomas J. Martin was the city’s first African American police officer lost in the line of duty in July 1870.
Recent historical and genealogical research into Martin will be revealed during a press conference at the City Gallery at 1 p.m.
Those expected to be in attendance include Mayor John Tecklenburg, Councilmember and Public Safety Committee Chairman Peter Shahid, Police Chief Luther Reynolds and other members of the community.
They will also discuss current Charleston Police initiatives that honor the fallen officer.
Martin will be inducted into the South Carolina Law Enforcement Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
