Early morning incident in West Ashley motel following short police chase over stolen license plate

West Ashley, S. C. – Suspect barricaded himself in a motel room in West Ashely after short police chase near the motel Thursday early morning, police say.

According to the authorities, officers tried to stop a vehicle around 4:20 a.m. on Savannah Highway when they noticed stolen license plates on it.

The driver refused to stop and tried to drive through a Motel 6 parking lot to elude law enforcement but hit a support pole, damaging the motel.

The driver and the passenger ran out of the disabled vehicle in an effort to fled the scene. However, officers caught the passenger, but they lost sight of the driver, police confirmed.

The deputies who responded at the scene realized that the driver of the vehicle is probably hidden in one of the motel rooms. They located him in one of the rooms and tried to arrest him.

The deputies surrounded the room, but the suspect was refusing to leave the room and he remained barricaded for some time. Shortly after, the driver surrendered to police and was arrested without incident.

Police didn’t disclose if the suspect was armed while he was hiding in the motel room.

The autoroutes later confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen and they found multiple other plates also believed to be stolen. Numerous other items were found in the car.

The driver and the passenger are facing various charges.

Once more details are available, we will update the case.
