In an effort to increase awareness of hot temperatures this summer, S.C. Gov. McMaster proclaims Heat Safety Week

Columbia, South Carolina – Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina has proclaimed this week as Heat Safety Week to emphasize the importance of taking care of oneself during hot weather. According to the state Department of Natural Resources, Heat Safety Week will be observed from April 29 to May 3.

To spread awareness and prevent heat-induced illnesses and fatalities, several state agencies are collaborating. These include the Climatology Office, the National Weather Service, the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Health and Environmental Control, and the state Emergency Management Division.

Throughout the week, the SCDNR has planned to distribute various safety tips and facts daily to help residents stay safe over the summer. For instance, starting May 1, the National Weather Service in Charleston will begin using new criteria for issuing Heat Advisory and Excessive Heat Warning alerts.
