Multiple reports of people smelling gas in Charleston and Mount Pleasant

Charleston, South Carolina – Officials in both Charleston and Mount Pleasant are responding to multiple reports of people reporting smelling gas.

Just before 9 a.m., Mount Pleasant fire crews responded to Doctors Care after staffers called the department.

The battalion chief told ABC News 4 Traffic Tracker Trooper Bob that they’ve had multiple reports of people smelling gas at various locations throughout the morning.

Shortly after 9 a.m., crews were leaving the area.

Trooper Bob reported that Charleston officials have been responding to similar calls.

According to a spokesperson for Dominion Energy, the utility provider started receiving these calls around 8:30 a.m.

A statement from Dominion can be read below:

“Safety is our top priority, and we take reports of gas leaks very seriously. Beginning at approximately 8:30 a.m. Dominion Energy started receiving several calls about odors across parts of Charleston and Mount Pleasant. Crews are responding to each call and continuing to investigate. At this time, no leak or third-party damage to our system has been confirmed.

We add a distinctive and pungent odor to natural gas that smells like rotten eggs to help detect a potential gas leak. The foul-smelling odor is not harmful but is designed as a warning that something may be wrong. If customers suspect a gas leak, we encourage them to call Dominion Energy at (800) 815-0083.”
