Several earthquakes reported in South Carolina today and in the last few days, most of them in the Elgin area

South Carolina – As we reported on Wednesday, two earthquakes were recorded in the Elgin area in less than 15 minutes.

According to South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD), the first earthquake, 3.3 magnitude earthquake, was recorded on Wednesday at 2:43 p.m. and it was centered 3 miles east of Elgin.

Less than 15 minutes later, at 2:57 p.m., 2.06 magnitude earthquake hit the Elgin area again. Per the SCEMD, it was centered 3.8 miles east of Elgin.

In the following days, several more earthquakes were recorded in the Elgin area. Small earthquake happened at 9:10 p.m. on Friday and measured in at 1.7.

A 2.1 magnitude earthquake shook the ground near Elgin again on Saturday. The earthquake happened at 11:59 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey. It happened 3.9 miles east of Elgin.

Today, USGS reported a 1.9 magnitude earthquake just over 3 miles east of Elgin at 12:16 a.m. At 6:30 a.m., USGS reported a 1.6 magnitude earthquake 4.3 miles SSW of Lugoff.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, South Carolina Emergency Management Division explained that there are multiple fault systems running throughout South Carolina and that’s the reason for earthquakes in the area. Per SCEMD, Palmetto State is one of the most seismically active states on the East Coast!
