Master Trooper Gary Miller confirmed that a total of six vehicles, all traveling southbound on I-95, were involved in the crash that was fatal for three people. Miller also said that all three of the people who died in the accident were in the same car.

When first responders arrived at the scene, a total of five vehicles were in the median, while one vehicle was on the opposite shoulder. Two of the vehicles that were in the median were on fire, and fire crews immediately started extinguishing the fire, preventing even more damage. Seven people were hospitalized at a local hospital for further treatment. A teenage girl, however, suffered more serious injuries and was flown from the scene to a trauma center. No details about the extent of the injuries were immediately provided.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, southbound lanes on I-95 were closed for six hours while crews responded to the accident.
