Charleston, South Carolina – Charleston County Public Works officials are preparing to meet with residents to share the latest information on a pedestrian safety project planned for Sol Legare Road on James Island. The effort focuses on improving walking conditions along a busy corridor that currently lacks consistent pedestrian infrastructure.
A community meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 9, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Sol Legare Community Center, located at 1964 Sol Legare Road. County officials say the meeting is intended to keep residents informed as the project moves through its early stages and to provide an opportunity for direct feedback.
During the presentation, Public Works staff will outline the progress made so far and walk attendees through conceptual designs for the planned improvements. Officials will also discuss what steps are expected next as the project advances through the design process. After the formal presentation, residents will be able to speak one-on-one with members of the project team and ask questions about the plans.

The Sol Legare Road Sidewalk Project is designed to create a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians traveling between Folly Road and the area near Chavis Road. Plans call for the construction of roughly one mile of concrete sidewalk, five feet in width, along Sol Legare Road. In addition to the sidewalk, the project includes upgrades to stormwater infrastructure, partial road repaving to improve drainage, and the relocation of existing utilities to support the new drainage features.

The project is currently in the design phase, which is being funded through a mix of state gas tax revenue and a state grant. Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2027, with work expected to continue into mid-2028.
