First lady Dr. Jill Biden to host a military event at Joint Base Charleston and visit MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center

First lady Dr. Jill Biden is in South Carolina since Sunday as she is expected to host a military event at Joint Base Charleston and visit MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center on Monday as a part of her trip.

According to her schedule, she is expected to visit MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center Monday afternoon as a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month before hosting the scheduled military event at Joint Base Charleston.

With Biden visiting the MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center, she will surely bring a lot of attention to the center itself as well as rising breast cancer awareness.

“We do see a lot of minority patients, or patients that come from underserved areas,” Cancer Center Director and Dean Dr. Raymond DuBois said.

“She’s very passionate about trying to do what she can to improve health and equity, especially in the cancer field,” he added.

During her visit, the Jill Biden will meet the Hollings Cancer Center personnel including students from their HBCU pipeline program.

The officials with the center will show their work and the whole ongoing process in the center.

The National Cancer Institute is expected to be visiting as well. DuBois says the Hollings Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated center in South Carolina, and only one of 71 that has earned an NCI designation, placing it in the top 4% nationwide.

“We’re on a journey to earn comprehensive status, and this helps us to achieve that vision,” he said.

According to Jill Biden’s schedule, she is expected to arrive at MUSC at 2:45 p.m., while the meeting with military families at Joint Base Charleston should take place later around 4:30 p.m.

She is expected to leave the state Monday night.
