Just Out: Latest College of Charleston Magazine

The winter 2021 issue of College of Charleston Magazine is just arriving throughout campus, in homes across the country and around the globe.

The diverse collection of stories includes the first photos of the $4.7 million renovation of the Sottile Theatre, a 250th anniversary crossword puzzle and reflections from CofC President Andrew T. Hsu on moving the College forward in the midst of a global pandemic. And of course, there are a number of profiles of interesting students, faculty and alumni who are making an impact. All of the current stories and stories from past issues are also available online.

Here are the feature stories from the new issue:

The Changemakers
Many have been responsible for the College of Charleston’s growth and increased prestige during its 250 years of existence, but some deserve special recognition for the impact they had on the College’s development and evolution. Meet the changemakers.

The Fish Listener
As an ichthyologist, Rodney Rountree ’87 (M.S.) has unveiled the myriad of sounds in our freshwater and marine ecosystems by identifying thousands of burps, coughs and, yes, even farts of fish that may play a vital role in their survival.

Math Whiz is a Real Rock Star
Despite winning the Department of Mathematics’ top honor, Jay Van Raalte ’20 plans on continuing her promising music career instead of going to graduate school – because, well, who wouldn’t want to be a rock star if they had the choice?

Averting Disaster
As a landslide mitigation expert with the United Nations, Marina Drazba ’05 helps implement preventative measures to save the lives of some of the world’s poorest, most vulnerable people.
