More than 2,500 students will be debt free, SC State clears student’s debts

Columbia, South Carolina – More than 2,500 students will soon be debt free as SC State will clear their student debts.

The total amount for the debt clearing will cost the SC State almost $10 million.

The acting President Alexander Conyers said that this will primarily aid students who are not able to continue with the studies because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The majority of these 2,500 students are returning students who have not registered for class or have dropped out because they could not pay for school.

“This is a tremendous weight I won’t have to carry,” Romaun Myers, a junior from Summerville, told the school in a press release.

“I’m a first-generation college student, one of the only boys on my mom’s side of the family. I have to make it so I can provide for my family.”

$4 million are Cares Act funds and $5.8 was allotted from the American Rescue Plan Act. The exact amount of the debt clearing is $9.8 million.

Students don’t have to do anything as this is an automated process.

Students who need more information about their accounts should contact Betty Boatwright at bboatwright@scsu.edu.
