Nursing homes, care facilities see a rise in COVID-19 cases

Charleston, South Carolina – Across the nation, nursing homes and care facilities are experiencing an uptick in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks.

The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) released a report on Wednesday that outlined new COVID-19 cases in nursing homes have reached a record number of weekly new cases, since more states have begun tracking cases in nursing homes.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the weekly new COVID-19 cases in the U.S. rose 140 percent to 572,613,527 new cases in the week of Nov. 1.

The Midwest seen the biggest surge, with nearly 50 percent of new cases coming from those states.

Deaths in nursing homes have also seen a slight rise in the past week as well, which can be found in this report as well.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control list 11 nursing homes or residential care facilities in Charleston County with “active” COVID-19 outbreaks.

Beaufort, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties all have two care facilities listed with “active” COVID-19 outbreaks. Georgetown County has four active outbreaks.
