Authorities issued a warning after a woman lost a huge amount of money in a romance scam

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina – The police were prompted to issue a warning to Beaufort County residents after an elderly woman from Hilton Head Island lost hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of a romance scam she reportedly fell victim to.

According to Beaufort County authorities, scammers use a false identity to earn the confidence and devotion of unsuspecting victims.

Scammers use manipulation techniques in order to persuade the victim to send them money through wire transfer or provide account details.

Scammers were able to take over $150,000 from the Hilton Head Island woman in the romance scam.

Therefore, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office provided tips in order to prevent the public from losing money in such a scam:

  • Be careful of what you post and make public online.
  • Research a person’s profile.
  • Beware if an individual seems too perfect or asks to communicate directly.
  • Never give a person you’ve only talked to online or on the phone your financial information or send them money.

If you believe that you have been the target of a scam, you should immediately report the specifics of the incident to the local authorities.
